Derek Point is nominated for the William M. Usdane Award. Over the last 23 years, Point has transformed from a utility worker to an indispensable general maintenance worker for Melwood Enterprises at the USDA's George Washington Carver Center. Point mastered carpentry, drywall repair, painting, minor electrical, and HVAC work when he was promoted to general maintenance worker three years ago. He now assists with major maintenance, including plumbing, drain cleaning, chiller tube cleaning, pump replacements, and motor bearing maintenance—demonstrating exceptional adaptability. Point takes on any opportunity to expand his skillset, working alongside engineers to learn complex technical skills. His willingness to help with both routine maintenance and major projects shows selfless dedication to team success. Even after decades of service, Point still actively seeks new challenges. His recent pursuit of forklift certification demonstrates his personal drive and commitment to continuous improvement.
