Eugene Lene is nominated for the William M. Usdane Award. Lene is a lead grounds service worker and manages Lanakila Pacific's largest contract site, Tripler Hospital, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His progress from a reserved individual ten years ago to an effective team leader reflects his commitment and ability to empower and engage his co-workers. Lene serves as a mentor for his colleagues, enhances morale and productivity, and facilitates smoother operations for his team. Over the past year, the grounds team faced significant challenges, including the sudden death of a valued co-worker and the departure of the department manager and an experienced grounds service worker. Lene played a critical role in supporting his team through these transitions. By welcoming new staff and fostering a positive, resilient atmosphere, he ensured continuity and improvement in performance. Through his leadership, Lanakila Pacific has improved the quality of its grounds maintenance services.
